3 Signs That Your Pickleball Overgrip Is Due For A Change

Is your pickleball grip feeling grimy and gross? It may be time for a change. Whether you're a seasoned player or just getting into the sport, your overgrip plays a huge role in comfort, control, and performance on the court. And just like shoes or strings, it wears out over time. Though most players may be paying more attention to their form, swing or the game itself, it’s also important to take notice of the wear-and-tear of your equipment – which could affect all the things listed above!

Why Change Your Grip?

The overgrip is the thin, replaceable layer wrapped around your paddle’s handle. It provides the tackiness, cushioning, and sweat absorption that keep you in control during rallies. But over time, it collects sweat, dirt and oil from your hands – all of which wear it down and make it less effective, and more gross.

When your grip loses its tackiness and cushioning, you're more likely to mishit the ball or make unforced errors. A secure hold on your paddle is just as crucial as solid stroke technique—both play a key role in your overall performance.

How To Tell?

  • Visually - Small Tears and Visible Dirt: If your grip is visibly dirty, discolored, or has small tears, fraying edges, or shiny spots, it’s probably past its prime. A clean, tacky grip should have a matte, smooth finish. If it looks like it’s been through too many battles—it probably has.

  • Feel - It Doesn’t Feel As Tacky And Grippy As Before: Over time, the grip loses its stickiness and cushioning. If it feels too smooth, slick, or hard, you're sacrificing control and possibly causing blisters. You should feel secure and comfortable holding your paddle—if not, time to regrip.

  • Smell - The Build Up of Bacteria and Germs: If your grip has developed a persistent smell, it’s likely harboring bacteria and has lost its ability to effectively absorb moisture—making replacement essential for both performance and cleanliness.

Why Is It Important To Change Your Grip Regularly?

Changing your grip isn't just about comfort—it's about performance and preventing injury. A worn-out grip can lead to:

  • Slips during play

  • Excess hand fatigue

  • Blisters or calluses

  • Reduced paddle control

If you play a few times a week, consider changing your overgrip every 2–4 weeks. Tournament players may need to switch it out even more frequently.
