From paddles to electrolyte packs, we’ve got your gear list covered. Don’t get caught unprepared—here’s what seasoned players keep in their bags.

Must-Have Gear – Paddles, Balls, Shoes
Starting with the non-negotiables, all players should have their go-to paddle (and their backup paddle, if there’s space), regardless of skill level. And of course, what’s a paddle without a ball? Be sure to carry 2-3 balls with you – you never know when a ball will crack mid-rally or fly to an unretrievable zone! Finally, you can’t forget the shoes. A good pair of court shoes can determine the difference between a good game and a great game by giving you that extra grip on the court!
Nice-to-Haves – Grip Tape, Towels, Cooling Gear
These might not seem essential at first—but once you’ve played a few sweaty matches, you’ll be glad you packed them.
Overgrip or Grip Tape – Grips wear down fast, especially in humid climates. Carry a spare overgrip for quick replacements to keep that fresh, tacky feel.
Towel – A small microfiber towel helps you wipe down sweaty hands, paddles, or face. Bonus: it doubles as a seat cushion or sunshade in a pinch.
Cooling Gear – Cooling towels or mist sprays can be game-changers during outdoor matches in the heat. Lightweight and easy to pack.
Snacks & Hydration Tips
Fuel matters – especially if you’re playing multiple games in a row! For drinks, while water may be sufficient for some, you might want to think about stocking up on electrolytes if you plan on playing an intensive few rounds. You can get your fix from sports drinks (like 100 Plus or PocariSweat) or electrolyte tablets.
For snacks, consider bringing easy-to-digest foods that are packed with energy while being court-friendly! Think bananas, trail mix or granola, energy bars or a simple PB&J sandwich.
Bag Recommendations
Popular brands offer dedicated pickleball bags, but tennis bags or small gym duffels work just as well if they’re organized. Look for a bag that:
Has separate compartments for shoes, gear, and dirty clothes
Is easy to carry (backpack or duffel style)
Has insulated pockets for drinks/snacks
Includes a hook to hang on the fence or bench
Some dedicated pickleball bags include Holbrook’s Podium Pickleball Backpack – which you can find exclusively at Performance Pickleball’s shop!

The better packed you are, the more confident and prepared you’ll feel walking onto the court. Whether you’re headed to a tournament or a casual match, having the right gear on hand helps you focus on your game—not what you forgot to bring. Pack smart, play smart.
